The economics of In-App Purchase

Marco

  • An app can only offer in-app purchasing if the app isn’t free.
  • But what about apps that were free?

Let’s suppose I publish an app at $0.99, then set it free to get users. And as soon as I am ready to sell in-app, I switch his price back to 0.99. Will the users that got it for free be able to purchase in-app?

If this is possible I could set the app free regularly to get users, and every once in a while switch it back to not free to qualify for in-app purchasing. And effectively provide a demo of the app without needing two versions on the App Store.

I think we won’t have to wait longer for someone to try this. And we will see what Apple thinks of it.
